How moving to music will get your Sparkle going
Monday, January 4, 2010 at 12:00PM I want to talk about dancing, and how dancing can be a way of getting in touch with your sparkle. If you don't like dancing, you can apply this in an area in your life that you do enjoy.
Dance like nobody is watching you
I love the saying "dance like nobody is watching you". When you dance like that I would call it Free Dancing. Dancing is a passion for me. When I really dance, I feel alive, I feel joy and freedom. But there is a difference between dancing and dancing. I guess that most of you have experienced an occasion when you "should" dance, perhaps at someone's wedding party, or some other sort of gathering and a couple of people try to drag you onto to the dance floor, shouting, "c'mon have a bit of fuuuun, come and dance." And you get up and start to dance, feeling very uncomfortable. It's like you "do" dancing rather that being in the dance.
I have taken dancing classes for years, and even so, often when I'm home dancing on my own, I catch myself dancing like someone is watching me, and I think, "what is this about?" I now use dancing as an indicator on how present I am in life generally, and dancing is a great tool to use to practise being more present.
So back to the example of being at a party and someone is dragging you onto the dance floor. Of course, you might not want to dance because you don't like the music, or you just genuinely don't want to dance. But I encourage you to listen to your heart and find out what's going on. Perhaps you are out of sync in your life at the moment, or may have been for a long time. Just notice it as an indicator for now.
Dance with your hands and feet
If you are ready to get the sparkle back, I have two suggestions for dancing practice that you can do. The first one is, you've guessed it: Free Dancing. Imagine that all your body parts can dance independently. Start by dancing with your hands, just your hands. Then you start to move your elbows as well as your hands to the music, your shoulders, your hips, your knees, your feet... Or you can start with your feet and work up. Notice what happens when you try to move all of your body parts to the music?
The other suggestion is to just dance, with the intention to let your body dance and not your mind - I know - it could be tricky, but be patient, just notice what's going on, in your mind and body. It's important to not make yourself wrong, be curious, like a detective.
